How do you motivate a child who just doesn't care and only does the bare minimum?

The sad truth is I feel so disappointed in him. I'm embarrassed for him. Of course I can't tell him that. I can't tell anyone. I can't admit that to a single person. I can't ask him why he has no pride in himself, why he won't push just a little bit more. He is last in everything and he is fine with that.

If anything it makes me feel better to rant about it.

I know all I can do is love him, encourage him and tell him I'm proud of him for just trying.

Right?
